Sydney Theatre Company - Rock N Roll![]() A Melbourne Theatre Company production The irresponsible, irrepressible freedom of spirit embodied in the rock and roll of the 70s collides with the monolithic small-mindedness of the Soviet Bloc in Tom Stoppard's latest comedy. Spanning two countries, three generations and 22 turbulent years, this epic and passionate play follows an English academic family headed by Max, a committed Marxist history professor, and Jan, a young student of Max's at Cambridge University. On his return home to Prague, Jan finds himself increasingly under the screws of Communist oppression in Czechoslovakia. Particularly over his support of his favourite band, The Plastic People Of The Universe. This play carefully unravels private lives through the unfolding of recent history, charting the collapse of ideology in Europe. Rock 'n' Roll is formally graceful and epic in its conception, with intimate and lovingly drawn characters who sparkle with all the wit and erudition of Tom Stoppard's greatest creations. With an accompanying soundtrack brimming with rock nostalgia, Rock 'n' Roll has already delighted critics and audiences alike in London and on Broadway, and collected a clutch of international awards. With Chloe Armstrong, Christopher Brown, Melinda Butel, Grant Cartwright, Danielle Cormack, Alex Menglet, Matthew Newton, Genevieve Picot, Richard Sydenham, William Zappa.
